Journalists under Pressure: Reorganizing of the State in Poland and the Media

At a panel discussion organized in cooperation with Reporters without Borders, the circumstances of polish media were discussed at the Netzwerk-Recherche conference in Hamburg.

Media in Poland are under pressure and polarized like never before. The nationalistic PiS-government has morphed public radio into a "national cultural institute," while the treasury minister is making personnel decisions. For these reasons, the EU-Commission has launched proceedings against Poland:

Is the end of press freedoms looming over Poland, just like in Hungary or in Russia, or are the problems of a more structural nature?

How nuanced are reports from the German press about its neighbor, a country that until recently was a poster child for the EU?

What role do negative stereotypical depictions of Germany play in Polish media, and how problematic is propaganda from German publishers in Poland?

These questions will be discussed by:

  • Monika Sieradzka, up until April 2016 reporter and managing editor at public television station TVP, and since then a freelance journalist in Warsaw.
  • Michal Kokot, editor at the Gazeta Wyborcza in Warsaw
  • Jan Puhl, correspondent covering Poland for Der Spiegel in Hamburg and Warsaw.

Moderation: Sonja Volkmann-Schluck, senior editor at n-ost.
